On June 29th, Lopes Family Farms hosted a field day with Community Alliance with Family Farms (CAFF) in Princeton, CA focused on rice and duck farming, a Biologically IntegratedFarming System (BIFS). For more informa tion, read about farm to school sales in the CAFF Farm 2 School Blog post.
SCN works with nonprofits and schools in the region to integratefarming and food production into their work and advocates for local policy that supports school gardens, urban farms, and community gardens and helps get fresh produce to food insecure residents.
In California, approximately three out of four farmers operate on less than 180 acres and/or less than $100,000 in annual sales and 19 percent–nearly 1 in 5–of California’s agricultural producers are socially disadvantaged.
The pandemic has resulted in the unpredictability and loss of markets, which has had a disproportionate impact on California’s small-scale farmers; particularly historically underserved farmers of color. But when you’re a small family farm, you’re just trying to make ends meet.”
