This is partially because they have been included as a key ingredient in the Biden administration’s pledge to reduce methane emissions in animal agriculture. At CAFOs, it is common to pool animal waste in one spot, called a manure lagoon. In 2020, manure accounted for about 9 percent of the US’s methane emissions.

A few years ago, JBS announced that it would “achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.” JBS USA’s parent company reported greenhouse gas emissions of 71 million tons in 2021. Concentrated animal agriculture is high in emissions because of things such as improper manure management and land used to grow feed.

But no regular farm produces that much manure. I called the office.

The organization introduces beneficial plants called green manure/cover crops which fertilize the soil, control weeds, and respond to periods of drought. They currently have 13 urban agricultural facilities, school gardens, hydroponic greenhouses, and soil-based farms.
