The Lower Yakima Valley in Washington state has been home to large-scale animalagriculture for decades, but in 2008 when one dairy operation tried moving onto the Yakima Indian Reservation, the community balked at the proposition. As the number of animals stuffed onto corporate farms increases, so has the amount of waste.
Concentrated animal feeding operations CAFOs are defined by the EPA as intensive feeding operations where many animals are confined and fed for at least 45 days per year (though it can be much more) and inevitably their manure and waste come in contact with ground and surface water. Now that he raises pigs, he can apply nutrient-rich solid manure to the familys grain fields, helping to build soil health further and reduce the use of synthetic fertilizersa benefit for both the environment and his wallet. Hutton feeds his grain crops to the pigs, which produce manure that he uses to nourish the ground and repeat the cycle.
The title of Maisie Ganzler’s new book, You Can’t Market Manure at Lunchtime: And Other Lessons from the Food Industry for Creating a More Sustainable Company , was born out of an experience Ganzler had while operating as chief strategy and brand officer at Bon App é tit Management Company. And there’s a lot of different things in play.

Dairy farmers across 15 states can apply for considerable financial support to adopt climate-smart manure management practices through a new initiative aimed at enhancing soil health, increasing herd productivity and minimizing environmental impact. Thats according to Transforming the Farmer to Consumer Supply Chain project leaders.
(Photography by Transfarmation / Mercy for Animals) In the United States, we still hold close an image of a quaint, independent family farm. But what actually exists is industrial animalagriculture, a system that does more harm than good. In late 2019, Mercy For Animals, the organization I lead, launched a new project.
launch of the XSplit® Separator, an innovative solution that significantly enhances manure management for dairy, cow, and livestock operations. The XSplit Separator efficiently transforms manure into material ideal for animal bedding and simplifies the separation of liquids from solids, boosting overall efficiency.
This system provides an unparalleled solution for removing moisture and oxygen from gas streams, addressing critical purification challenges in livestock applications such as biogas production from manure digesters.
This is partially because they have been included as a key ingredient in the Biden administration’s pledge to reduce methane emissions in animalagriculture. At CAFOs, it is common to pool animal waste in one spot, called a manure lagoon. In 2020, manure accounted for about 9 percent of the US’s methane emissions.
Concentrated animalagriculture is high in emissions because of things such as improper manure management and land used to grow feed. JBS USA’s parent company reported greenhouse gas emissions of 71 million tons in 2021. This is higher than the total emissions of some countries.
a number of scientists are pointing to one factor that could be driving the spread of its virus and its spillover from wild birds to farm animals. Waterfowl—ducks, geese, and swans—are the primary host of the viruses, and large animalagriculture facilities are often found in close proximity to their remaining wetland habitats.
There are small, medium and large CAFOs, with the largest of these—housing thousands to tens of thousands of animals—embodying the truest definition of a “factory farm.” Many of the issues can be boiled down to the sheer concentration of manure they produce. But no regular farm produces that much manure. I called the office.

The EPA also reported lower nitrous oxide emissions from feedlot manure, captured in manure lagoons, “which are major sources of both methane and nitrous oxide,” said Lilliston. “So, “So, when you have fewer cows, you’re going to have fewer enteric [fermentation] emissions coming from the cow itself.” And it’s not just methane.
Alternative Manure Management Program (AMMP) The RPFSA does not contain a proposal to support AMMP technologies as envisioned in the ARA or the COWS Act. RPFSA upholds several competition measures in the animalagriculture supply chain, like the establishment of an Office of the Special Investigator for Competition Matters.
The organization introduces beneficial plants called green manure/cover crops which fertilize the soil, control weeds, and respond to periods of drought. Their work tackles a range of food systems issues including food equity, animalagriculture, urbanization, food waste, seafood, and healthy and sustainable diets.
Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, the same farmers struggling with the effects of climate change, like drought, are revolting against stricter regulations on pollution from livestock manure. Our family struggled coming out of the ’80s.
The initiative aims to triple the productivity of smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa in 20 years by promoting green manure and cover crops that restore soil health, combat drought, and enhance farm resilience.
Reduce Environmental Impact of AnimalAgriculture Two California Democrats—Senator Alex Padilla and Representative Jim Costa—led the introduction of the Converting Our Waste Sustainably (COWS) Act. That makes sense, since the bill creates a federal program modeled after a successful initiative in their state.

Members of Congress will likely reapprove a policy that may be obscuring the deaths of hundreds of animalagriculture workers—and which leaves the vast majority without any oversight or protection—despite concerns from worker advocates and a key legislator.
