Originally constructed by Native Hawaiians hundreds of years before colonization, the effort resurrected a 1.3-mile mile rock-walled lagoon used for aquaculture. In 2001, executive director Kanekoa Shultz, a marine biologist and seaweed expert, helped rebuild the adjacent Paepae o Heʻeia fishpond.
