As the sun sets over the rolling hills and the cattle graze peacefully in the meadows, it's easy to appreciate the timeless beauty of ranching. Sustainable grazing practices, on the other hand, ensure that pastures remain lush and fertile by allowing plants to recover and regenerate.
The farm is an organic fifth-generation beef and dairy farm in north Somerset, which is mainly made up of permanent pasture and hay meadows, both rich in native grasses, wildflowers and wildlife. Langford Farm, run by Teresa and Charlie Allward, was one of the farms involved in the pilot.
At the same time, productive land as well as field margins and natural areas can be of great value to nature – a traditionally managed hay meadow or unsprayed crop can harbour and support a range of biodiversity and facilitate the movement of species through the landscape. Our cattle are outside all year, and we don’t feed any grain.

The couple have established a thriving low-input vegetable-growing business, supported by a small number of cattle and pigs that fertilise the land and provide the family with home-reared meat. One of these, a Longhorn Limousin cross, who would later come to be known as Bullock 374, was purchased by Robinson.
The Gaucho was swinging a set of ‘boleadoras; above his head, which is the traditional tool to help them wrangle cattle. It is always very exciting to see cattle operations in different environments. Its topography of rolling hills, covered with massive eucalyptus trees and beautiful meadows of rye grass, are sure to not disappoint.
