On April 10th, Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) hosted a field day at Heartwood Farms in Linden, CA with farmers Franz Eilers and Emma Wade to discuss all things compost and pest management on their biologically-integrated walnut and cherry orchards. The compost created from ground-up walnut prunings and cover crop mowings.
It’s a great gateway crop,” says Don DiLillo, owner of Finest Foods in Huntington, New York, for ushering in a new breed of novice farmers. Yet with California’s agricultural hub dominated by large-scale farms and commodity crops, he’s found a comfortable niche at his local farmers market.
As farmers who work in unpredictable climates, we know the importance of growing a diverse range of foods and harvesting various parts to make up for times when cash crops are scarce. Although cutting leaves may slow fruit production, it’s often a necessary part of plant pruning.
After a very wet winter, attendees enjoyed the nice weather as they gathered in the orchard to discuss a novel mower prototype, pruning, and nematode management. The attendees then got to observe the mower in action as James mowed down a cover crop strip. Attendees gather in the cover cropped orchard to watch the mower demo.
They also require regular watering, pruning and fertilizing throughout their lifespans so they don't die prematurely. Although these perennial trees are still prone to disease and damage from pests, they are generally stronger and require a bit less care than annual crops. Fruit trees need lots of sun and space to grow properly.
I attribute that to all the organic matter we have added to the soils, whether that has been chipped prunings (we have been incorporating them for almost 20 years), cover crop residue, or whole orchard recycling chips.” Yet, this equipment is usually needed only a few days out of the year.
Hartman’s guide to how to downsize to fit into an urban or suburban neighborhood is like a study in farming history: pare down to seven tools, leave roots in place to nourish the soil, and “trust the compost.” Hartman maximizes many practices from the past while implementing today’s tech “on a human scale” to reap the greatest reward.
MAKE Farm, a roughly quarter acre plot, uses low-till practices to improve soil health and nutrient density in crops, along with intercropping – growing two or more crops close together – and integrated pest management. full_link READ MORE Meet the refugee farmers planting the crops of their homelands in Texas soil.
