Anyone familiar with the CEA industry is aware of the critical importance of energy in running an indoor verticalfarm. Without consistent and reliable power, these farms can endure lower yields or even suffer a loss of crops, which translates to a loss of revenue. Could Microgrids be the Solution?
Certification also plays a pivotal role in driving sustainable urban development and construction within the CEA sector. Furthermore, a certification specifically for indoor farms does not exist. However, nothing materialized beyond the research, and the industry is still without a sustainability certification scheme.
We spoke to Urban Crop Solutions about the key considerations in the industry when investing in an indoor verticalfarm, and they offered some guidance on how to approach these situations. Is an indoor verticalfarm right for you?
Most research on urban agriculture has focused on a single type of urban farming, often high-tech projects, such as aquaponic tanks, rooftop greenhouses or verticalfarms. We looked instead at the life cycle emissions of more common low-tech urban agriculture – the kind found in urban backyards, vacant lots and urban farms.
We’ve reached a point of optimization for the platform and the farms and have multiple years of at-scale farming expertise with our technology. Now, we’re focusing on enabling the next generation of verticalfarming infrastructure for other operators. Why are you choosing containers as your integration of choice?
