Since we had land—and we also had a good relationship with the local Farmer’s Cooperative, which generously donated seeds, plants, and fertilizer—a garden felt like a good way to support the community. I should mention that our farm was, and still is, a family farm in the strongest sense. My accent resembles theirs.
