In this episode we travel to Southern California to meet with Samuel Guitron of Gospel Swamp Farm in Santa Ana and Johnny Wilson from The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano to talk all about Integrated Pest Management, or IPM, in urban farms.

On June 29th, Lopes Family Farms hosted a field day with Community Alliance with Family Farms (CAFF) in Princeton, CA focused on rice and duck farming, a Biologically IntegratedFarming System (BIFS). Claire Tauber from CAFF’s Farm to Market team, Miguel Alvarez and Hanna Kahl from CAFF’s EcologicalFarming team.
SCN works with nonprofits and schools in the region to integratefarming and food production into their work and advocates for local policy that supports school gardens, urban farms, and community gardens and helps get fresh produce to food insecure residents.
This Healthy Soils Week event, sponsored by CDFA OPCA’s Biologically IntegratedFarming Systems (BIFS) Grant, highlighted the collaborative nature of sustainable food and farming. These discussions were supported by booths with resources from NRCS, Kamprath Seeds, and Lodi Rules.
Failure to robustly fund public research that promotes ecologically-based production systems stifles scientific and technical innovation and leaves US farmers and ranchers unable to fully participate in and benefit from emerging markets for sustainably-produced foods.
