AMOS MILLER UPDATE

The Lunatic Farmer

Pete Kennedy, attorney, says that the Amos Miller trial Monday went very well for the Amish man prosecuted by Pennsylvania food police. They allege he's selling illegal meat to people; he says his voluntary neighbor friends are not buying anything, according to the legal definition of "in commerce." Kennedy says he thinks the judge will require Miller to pay a fine, but it won't be nearly as much, perhaps by a long shot, of what the state wants.

The Things Dads do For Sons

Agribusiness Blog

Many of you know that I have four sons (ranging from age 27-34). Only one son is married with a 2 year-old granddaughter and a 6 month old grandson. They had visited my wife and I for about three weeks during the first part of June. I actually had flown down to Phoenix and helped my son drive his Bernedoodle up to Washington state (we did get a round of golf in).

GRASS MANAGEMENT

The Lunatic Farmer

When management intensive grazing was popularized through the Stockman Grass Farmer 40 years ago, the theme was disturbance and rest. Allan Savory through Holistic Management began taking pictures of remarkable recoveries when animals at high density for a short period of time (one day) heavily impacted a spot with hooves and manure. In more recent years, however, a "take half, leave half" message has come on strong within the grass farming movement.

Debt Relief for Farmers of Color & White Allies

A few weeks ago, an odd request appeared on an online farmer discussion group to which I belong. A lawyer was soliciting white farmers to join a lawsuit fighting a new USDA loan forgiveness program aimed at helping minority farmers, claiming it unfairly excluded white farmers… like me. This program, open to Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, Asian and Pacific Islander farmers, was intended to help relieve the financial barriers to farm ownership created by generations of discrimination, the legacy of

The Proposed Transfer Tax Can be Much Worse for Most Farmers Than the Estate Tax

Agribusiness Blog

President Biden’s American Families Plan proposes a new transfer tax on farm and ranch families. Many commentators refer to this as an elimination of the step-up in basis. This is incorrect. Step-up in basis remains, however, families will now face a burdensome transfer tax during lifetime or at death. Farming and ranching are very capital-intensive with low margins, subject to the whims of weather and markets outside the control of the farmer or rancher.

Will Section 199A Deduction Get Changed?

Agribusiness Blog

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) introduced a bill to make changes to the Section 199A deduction. The key changes are as follows: The Section 199A deduction would be eliminated for trusts and estates. It would raise the threshold to $400,000 but would completely phase-out the deduction once your taxable income (before the deduction) reaches $500,000.
