Today’s post will not have anything to do with taxes other than there is less than 4 days before this tax season is finally over. Last Saturday I worked my normal 12 hour or so day (at least normal during tax season) and got to bed around 9 pm. At about midnight I woke up with what I would call a very bad case of food poisoning so I did not have a very enjoyable night, but when I finally woke up around 7 am, I found that we had about 4 inches of snow on the ground.
The start of this year has been a haul for a lot of us, and I realized that in the bustle of early spring and the gloominess of everything going on this winter, we haven’t shared the more fun things we are doing on the farm for 2022. The big deal this year in terms of projects is that we are going to do something very different… NOTHING new! We are trading out equipment that isn’t working well in our farm system!

Congress a couple of years ago passed the SECURE Act which changed the required minimum distribution (RMD) date from age 70 1/2 to age 72. Last week the House passed “SECURE 2” which would increase the RMD age to 73 starting in 2023, then age 74 in 2030 and finally age 75 in 2033. This allows taxpayers additional time for the tax-deferred compounding of IRAs and other retirement accounts.

As avian influenza runs through the nation’s poultry flocks, with the current extermination of about 28 million laying hens and turkeys, I can’t help but wonder why we aren’t putting beak masks on the chickens.
