I had gotten married the summer before and my wife would drive me downtown after school. I still remember the first partnership tax return that I prepared.

Snow in April?

Agribusiness Blog

Today’s post will not have anything to do with taxes other than there is less than 4 days before this tax season is finally over. Last Saturday I worked my normal 12 hour or so day (at least normal during tax season) and got to bed around 9 pm. At about midnight I woke up with what I would call a very bad case of food poisoning so I did not have a very enjoyable night, but when I finally woke up around 7 am, I found that we had about 4 inches of snow on the ground.

Philadelphia’s public transportation is known to be unreliable: In 2019, the city was ranked 89th of 100 U.S. cities using factors including safety, convenience, and accessibility. Yet many employers don’t take this spotty service into account when considering the punctuality of workers who rely on this particular public service for their daily commute.

Will 75 be the New RMD Age

Agribusiness Blog

Congress a couple of years ago passed the SECURE Act which changed the required minimum distribution (RMD) date from age 70 1/2 to age 72. Last week the House passed “SECURE 2” which would increase the RMD age to 73 starting in 2023, then age 74 in 2030 and finally age 75 in 2033. This allows taxpayers additional time for the tax-deferred compounding of IRAs and other retirement accounts.

BEAK MASKS

The Lunatic Farmer

As avian influenza runs through the nation’s poultry flocks, with the current extermination of about 28 million laying hens and turkeys, I can’t help but wonder why we aren’t putting beak masks on the chickens. If masks are so effective against viruses in the human population, why don’t we just make a chicken mask to stop this virus? Seems like a better fix than exterminating all these animals.

Will You Get Burnt With a Captive

For many years there has been a provision in the Tax Code that allows a “small” insurance company to earn premiums tax-free. As you can guess any time something can be earned tax-free there may end up being some abuses. These “captive” insurance companies are created to provide insurance to the companies that create them. If these captive insurance companies are well diversified, then the IRS and Congress appears to not have any issues with them.
