Fairfield SILTFest Draws Big Crowd

SILT hosted its annual Solstice SILTFest at the Sustainable Living Coalition in Fairfield in June. More than 75 people came to hear from speakers John Ikerd, Stuart Valentine and others and enjoy music by Steve McLain and Eric Hurlin. With the support of the Fairfield community, SILT was able to raise $10,000 to continue their mission of permanently protecting Iowa farmland to grow healthy food.

REGULATORY TRENDS

Smithfield Foods Inc. has just announced that in early 2023—less than a year from now—it will close its processing plant in Vernon, California (near Los Angeles). It operates 45 plants throughout the U.S., owned by umbrella company WHGroup Ltd. out of Hong Kong but really a Chinese company. Of course, the factory farmers in California supplying this plant, which employs 1,800 people, will also probably fold.

Highest Mileage Rate Ever

The IRS announced late last week an update auto mileage rate for the remaining six months of 2022. Normally the IRS only announces the rate for a full year, however, in times of gasoline volitility, they will update it more quickly. Based on memory, this is the highest rate at 62.5 cents per mile up 4 cents. The medical mileage rate will also increase 4 cents to 22 cents per mile.

Farm Real Estate Loans Trend Up Slightly

The Kansas City Federal Reserve released their latest Ag Finance Update. The report contained four charts that we found interesting and we will review each one. Chart 1 shows the rate of change for farm loans outstanding at banks. During 2019-2021 farm loans showed a negative rate of change. An influx of MFP, PPP and CFAP likely resulted in this trend.

What Is Adjusted Gross Income From Farming?

The Emergency Relief Program (ERP) has a payment limit of $125,000. However, if more than 75% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) is from farming, then you qualify for an extra $125,000 payment. Speciality crop farmers would qualify for up to $900,000 per producer. However, what is farming AGI. Technically it is not gross income from farming. It is the net income generated by the farm compared to all of your other sources of income that is reported on your tax return.
