Yesterday we had a delightful Australian couple drop by the farm. They’re Queensland natives, in their 60s, sharp small business owners all their lives, and have now fled Australia for America under the immigration investment program. I had them share with our Polyface team at supper because as I listened to their story, I found it profoundly disheartening and yet heartening.

Over the last few months, I’ve been working with a farmer on her business plan for building out an on-farm processing facility. She wants to take her heritage breed pigs and create custom, value-added charcuterie. It’s a big investment of time and money; and there’s a lot of uncertainty. As we wrapped up our work, the farmer asked me, “Do you think this will work?
I just got off of a webinar with the North Dakota CPAs and the North Dakota FSA office dealing with the Farm Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) issues that CPAs and Attorneys have been dealing with since the program was announced a few weeks ago. We have gotten many questions regarding what is considered farm income for FSA purposes. Farm income for tax purposes is fairly straight-forward. For FSA purposes, not-so-much. This post will have a series of Q & A’s that we have gotten and our current answers. Much of this topic is still unsettled since the guidance in the FSA Handbook 6-PL is not totally clear or has not been updated for tax law changes such as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
With a third year of severe drought and another wildfire season already heating up, Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) is relaunching its California Family Farmer Emergency Fund for farmers in crisis. Based on memory, this is the highest rate at 62.5 cents per mile up 4 cents. The medical mileage rate will also increase 4 cents to 22 cents per mile.
We had a reader ask the following question: “How do you compute non-farm income & expenses for Form 1120?” Adjusted gross income (AGI) for a C corporation is much easier to calculate than for other taxpayers. It is simply the total amount of taxable income reported on line 30 (total taxable income) plus line 19 (charitable contributions).

Chart 1 shows the rate of change for farm loans outstanding at banks. During 2019-2021 farm loans showed a negative rate of change. An influx of MFP, PPP and CFAP likely resulted in this trend.
Confused about FSMA Water Requirements? In 2011 President Obama signed into law the Food Safety Modernization Act ( FSMA ). If so, can these wages and dividends be included in only 2020 calculations of the three year average, or can you include them in the 2018 and 2019 part of the three year average?

The Emergency Relief Program (ERP) has a payment limit of $125,000. However, if more than 75% of your adjusted gross income (AGI) is from farming, then you qualify for an extra $125,000 payment. Speciality crop farmers would qualify for up to $900,000 per producer. However, what is farming AGI. Technically it is not gross income from farming. It is the net income generated by the farm compared to all of your other sources of income that is reported on your tax return.
