This week, the California State Legislature passed and Governor Gavin Newsom signed a series of budget bills that include significant investments in drought relief for small farms. After spending months listening to farmers and relaying their concerns to state leaders, Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) praised these immediate investments.
First, I apologize for messing up the date on the last blog post for the webinar we did yesterday for the North Dakota Society of CPAs. Also, our service that sends out the post usually does it early the next morning after we do a post. However, lately, it sometimes takes an extra day which the case for this post. The good news is that there is a recording of the webinar avialable.
SILT hosted its annual Solstice SILTFest at the Sustainable Living Coalition in Fairfield in June. More than 75 people came to hear from speakers John Ikerd, Stuart Valentine and others and enjoy music by Steve McLain and Eric Hurlin. With the support of the Fairfield community, SILT was able to raise $10,000 to continue their mission of permanently protecting Iowa farmland to grow healthy food.
Smithfield Foods Inc. has just announced that in early 2023—less than a year from now—it will close its processing plant in Vernon, California (near Los Angeles). It operates 45 plants throughout the U.S., owned by umbrella company WHGroup Ltd. out of Hong Kong but really a Chinese company. Of course, the factory farmers in California supplying this plant, which employs 1,800 people, will also probably fold.
