Large plantations reemerged in the Delta, worked by sharecroppers rather than slaves. In 1944, International Harvester tested the first mechanical cotton picker on a plantation just south of Clarksdale, Mississippi. He has plansbut no financing so farfor a 15,000-square-foot plant that would make dried vegetable chips.
