In 1944, International Harvester tested the first mechanical cotton picker on a plantation just south of Clarksdale, Mississippi. A gap year of just travelling didn’t feel right, so he took a job on a palm oil plantation in Papua New Guinea. The shop is housed in a modern, one-storey building. In 2005, aged 23, he returned to the farm.
