In Bad Naturalist, an Author Settles on a Mountain Top and Tries to Farm

Two hundred years ago, many of these hillsides were timbered for orchards. Around forty years ago, most of the orchards were replaced with cattle pasture. The forest encroached on the meadow, pioneer poplar, locust, and sassafras saplings taking the lead. It would serve as a living example of how to restore native meadows!
